Located along the famous Karakoram Highway, Hazara Division mainly comprises Abbottabad and Mansehra District. Bordered by the Indus River in the West, and Azad Jammu Kashmir in the East, the terrain rises from 1200 m asl around Abbottabad up to 5200 m asl in the Kaghan valley, North-East of Mansehra.
Due to the prevalence of dense forests in the area and the high importance of forest resources for the local economy, several villages in Mansehra District were chosen as study locations.
